It's voting time!

In the world of 3D online comic there seems to be a couple of release patterns. Huge chapters released rather infrequently, such as G9 and H3N. The alternative is short chapters every month or so, like the paid stuff over at MCComix.

The question I have is, what's best? What do you prefer? Let me know in the survey -->

That's all...

Well, maybe not all. Here's a quick preview from Fangs Chapter 3...

  5. I would have to say long chapters, it lets you fix any mistakes if you have any before you send it to the masses.

  6. I'm not sure if my opinion has any worth because I'm obviously stuck in the "long chapters camp", but I'd say there is a middle ground between the two extremes you mention.

If you plan to have any sensible story that takes itself seriously but don't work with a carefully planned script and storyboard (which is your situation, right?), then the mccomix format of 15-24 pages chapters is a no-go. You'll either play it safe and end up with a super superficial story with predictable, repeating patterns, or you'll end up with a story that is all over the place, plotholes everywhere, flashbacks needed to cover up earlier mistakes, a hopeless mess.

Obviously, the ideal situation is to be able to present your readers with a steady flow of quality material, but it's so hard to pull that off:
-You don't do this for your job.
-You work alone so you don't go into meetings to discuss the next part of the story with a number of colleagues.

On the other hand, chapters don't need to be as big as G9 or H3N make them for their main series. You already didn't do that with both chapters of Fangs and even those chapters could've been cut into half, I'm sure. (Chapter 1 only in hindsight because you weren't completely sure about continuing this, so you went for a sorta complete story, correct?)

If you find yourself working chronologically through the chapter, not adding/removing pages to/from earlier parts or switching scenes from position or any similar tweaking AND you find yourself being indifferent about each and every chapter having the "right" balance and conveying that special impression that you want your readers to experience...then you'll probably be able to go for chapters of 80-100 pages, maybe even 60-70 pages.
That's still a nice amount of story that we're getting while it's also a "safe" number of pages that allows you to go back for some fixes or think of some more story ideas while you're working on them.

Personally, however, I'd simply like to see you keep doing what you have done so far because whatever it was that you did: it led to 2 very fine chapters.
In both chapters, I was able to experience a story. It kept on giving me more pages for a long while instead of being already over before I knew it.
If it were just porn or fetish stuff only, then a quickie of 24 pages would be sufficient. You are putting effort into the story, however, so then I easily prefer longer chapters.

    1. Or he can use the simple way and let us know when he finished a page. In this way the Chapter doesn't need to have a really finish. The chapter can have 20 or 200 pages, because we don't know and don't need to wait to much because he can post just a page per week or something like these or much faster.

I prefer to see a page per day if you can if not, one per week.

  7. I would say short enough for a faster release but long enough like a scene in the comics. This way you plan out everything but you release it every 50%? or something just like how Shinra is doing it now

  8. Personally, I'd like shorter more frequent chapters merely due to the lack of content. Just my .02.

    1. I agree, I don't understand the people who voted less frequent chapters. Are you stupids ? Why you want something late than frequent!

    2. Quite a bold statement to call almost 50% of the voters "stupids", no matter for what reason.

The choice is not simply only between frequent or not. The choice is also about a potential loss of quality that is caused by the rush of "needing" to post pages faster. Of course there is no one who prefers to see the pages arrive later on purpose, just for the sake of it.

The comics from the paysites like mccomix serve as good comparison examples. Most are very superficial with a paper-thin plot and with a predictable structure. Backgrounds and poses are stupidly simple and basic. It's all fairly quick to make, but it shows in the quality of the result. Each installment also needs to contain fetish content because that is what the customer is paying for, but it's tough to write a convincing story that is more than an excuse to weave fetish scenes together.

Since Fangs has an above-average focus on storytelling (for a fetish comic), AND because Cantraps hasn't written the whole story in advance but rather makes it on the go, there is a danger that the story will lose its current quality if Cantraps has less time to make cohesive scenes.

There may also be a surge of sudden filler content just to give the reader their vampirism pages each time.
Let's not be naive here: if Cantraps would release a (small) chapter without vampirism, there will be massive complaining. Should this happen twice in a row, many readers will give up on this story. If you look at the story thus far, there are multiple parts where there are many pages in succession without any biting. If these pages would have been released as their own mini chapters, there would have been a lot of negative feedback. Anonymous can be really unforgiving, you know.

So this is why I voted for the "less frequent but longer chapters", stupid voter that I apparently am. It's not that I downright WANT to wait longer, but I'll gladly do so if the story can maintain its current high quality.

  9. Hope you do mind Mpgrey for borrowing your line I believe in your comment as well.

    1. Then wait a fucking year for a Chapter !

    2. Were zen masters of waiting over there on Shinras blog, we already waited a year for half a chapter. And again the lads been missing for a month. At this rate we are going to transcend through space and time.

  10. I think what people are upset with is the lack of things to see, if the thing is just updated every week, maybe just teasers and a progress check people won't be so against a full chapter release.
