Fangs - Part 4 - The Conclusion

Yes, you read it right. This is the final part of Fangs!

Who will survive? Who won't? Will we see a happy ending, or will everyone die in a huge explosion again (no!)?

Don't worry though, I won't be stopping making content. I just felt that I was spinning my wheels with Fangs and wanted to bring the story to a close. I've been playing with a few other ideas so we'll see where we go next, and you never know, you might see some of the Fangs characters pop up in other stories!

  3. Review time!

I sure hadn't expected that the 4th chapter would also end being the last of the story, but I suppose it's also not that surprising considering the struggles you've had to keep this series on track. With main character Melinda being in her own body again at the end of chapter 3, the story did lend itself to be wrapped up. The problem is that I feel that you took "wrapped up" very literally.

I'm sorry, Cantraps, but this final chapter is one big chain of wrapping up all the mini storylines that were still roaming about, and nearly all of them contain unbelievable and unrealistic actions or reactions from the characters involved. The whole feeling of "I don't know what to do with the story anymore. Let me just quickly rush to the end" is present everywhere. This chapter has just a single theme in the story: all characters return to El Diablo. The only part that is about something different is Kit's discovery of a robo-vampire, but with that being Katie, this too immediately ends up being part of all the characters needing to gather at that central place.

A character that got to shine in her own special way by being immune to the whole "thing" in this series gets a good amount of screentime, but ends up being a massive anticlimax. Super special Kit couldn't be made into a vampire. Okay, then let's simply not bite her but give her some nanomachines by a simple touch. Presto. And then as the demon that she becomes...she does absolutely nothing! End of role.
The rollerblade girls introduced in the previous chapter (with quite some pages dedicated to them) as well as the return of the superior are done away with in just a few pictures as some random monster that also needs to go to the club. This random monster then easily absorbs one of the vampires before being defeated just as easily.
If this hadn't been wrapping up, you'd get points from me for originality for making Electra not the great evil that she appeared to be, but unfortunately this too was just a means to get the story to an end. But when Melinda returns to being human at the end, you'd think that Electra regains control over herself and she would sweep the floor with poor Melinda. Instead she just leaves with everyone to feed on poor Kimiko, leaving human Melinda and human Katie alone.
Katie reverting back from robo-vampire to normal human also doesn't make sense considering that Electra got the same treatment and just remained a vampire. Silver betraying Electra for an almost comedy reason didn't fit either, nor did the hopelessly ill-equipped team of officer Banks and Kimiko! What did they think they could achieve going to a den of vampires alone with just a single wooden stake??? And how could officer Banks get Kimiko out of detention? She was suspended!

The list of questionable and comical-for-the-wrong-reasons decisions goes on and is way too big to do your series justice. Fangs didn't deserve this awkward and sloppy (also many typos again) conclusion. You may remember from the other chapters that I praised your storytelling skills above all else, so it almost feels like this last chapter was written by your evil long-lost twin brother clone.

As a colleague in comic making, I know that it's not nice to receive harsh and negative reviews about something that you spent so much time on, so I'm sorry that my opinion is like it is. Even so, the quality of the graphics is still there and appears to have been upgraded once more (you getting better and better with Daz). I'm therefore looking forward to see your next project: one that has your full dedication and inspiration again. This chapter may have disappointed me, but I'll be there day one again to see your next release.

Despite this all, thanks for Fangs! :)

    1. Just wondering, has the script for HC been finish long ago and we're just all waiting for our man Shinra to have the time to push the story out?

    2. Script for HC is done for the first 10 parts (Shinra is working on 3). So yes I'm one of two people who know how book 1, (and book 2) ends. I've been out of contact with Shinra so I don't know what's up, but I wish him well.-JN

    3. Wait i thought HC was a 4 part series, there are 10 parts now? And book 1 and 2? How many chapters are there in total?

    4. We were ambitious when I wrote it. I had conceived it as a five book, 20 chapter series (though much shorter in chapter length than Fallen Star). Whole thing is outlined. The twists in Book 2 surprised Shinra (and I actually think it's better than book 1.. alas)

      Book 1 has 4 parts.

    5. So how many books or chapters have been covered so far in the comics? I assume we're only somewhere near end of book 1 or start of book 2?

  5. Once again a fun comic. While you may be done with Fangs, do you have any interests in doing a couple pinups of the characters?

  6. Wow, that was very interesting) So much storylines you've combined in a single, maybe a little bit fast they change each other, but i think, i can understand, why)
And ending.... as for me it's perfect. Today not often i meet opened endings, but this is very cool. Because during whole story of Melinda's image forms as inventive person, but only in first and last character i saw her feelings. And ending defenetely show's: She said, that do anything for love, and she did. Not really, but she acts like it's been done)) Sorry for my english, i'm not native speaker, so i can't write it more beautifull.

  7. The ending is acceptable to end Fangs story but it feels rushed, that's the big downside. Myself, i think you should have spent more time in building up this part villain, Black Latex Majin Buu :D

Finally, i'll put your description here: "They say bad girls have the most fun, but it's their journey to the dark side that's the most fun to watch!"

And i fully agree. My biggest problem with the ending was Melinda getting nearly un-corrupted. She had a good evil journey thou, so i guess it's fine.

Don't get me wrong with my critics, it was a good story and i'll keep an eye out for your next works.
